Signs of Impending Auto AC Problems

Soaring summer temperatures can turn your car into an oven, which is why the air conditioner is such a popular feature on most cars. Just like the rest of your car, though, the AC needs to be properly maintained to work correctly. The following are few warning signs that your AC may be struggling. If you experience any of these, have your AC repaired before it gives out completely.

Sign #1: Whining or rattling noises

There are a couple of different noises that can indicate an AC problem, but they will both occur mainly when the AC is on. A whining noise is most commonly caused by the belt wearing out. You may sometimes hear the whine when the AC isn't on, since many cars have a drive belt that operates several components, but it it is usually the loudest and most insistent when the AC is running. The other noise to watch for is a rattling noise only when the AC is running. This can be caused by a loose blower, a broken component in the AC, or debris in the AC.

Sign #2: Weird odors

There are several different causes of weird odors. A burning smell means that there is a friction issue within the AC—sometimes you will smell burnt rubber if the belt is giving out. A smell like gunpowder or a metallic burning odor may mean that there could be a short somewhere. Musty odors are usually a sign of mold growth, which could be due to a condensation issue or a cabin filter that needs to be replaced. Sometimes, a blocked AC drain will also lead to musty odors or even a rotten smell when the AC is turned on.

Sign #3: Water issues

Condensation from the air conditioner drains from the bottom of your car, which is why you will often find a water spot on your driveway after running errands on a hot summer day. If you don't see any water draining from the car after running the AC, or if you are instead finding wet spots under the dash or on the carpeting, then you may have a blocked drain in your air conditioner. This is causing the condensation to overflow into your car instead of draining harmlessly below.

Contact an AC repair shop if you notice any of these signs so you can have the AC inspected and repaired before it begins to blow nothing but hot air.
